The Navajo are an interesting people. I lived for a short time on a Navajo reservation in Arizona. In their language, the majority of their nouns are descriptive, compound words – for example, their word for “dog,” translates into, “little animal that poops on the floor.”
When you see a Navajo family driving to or from somewhere in a pickup truck, the man will be driving, and his wife and children may well be riding in the back of the truck. One could easily witness this, and feel empathy for the woman without realizing that the Navajo culture is a matriarchal one – the truck that the husband drives may well be the only thing he owns – the home, a hogan, is hers. She may well cook for him, if she so chooses, but she is under no obligation to do so, as the food that they bought at the store they may have just come from, is hers as well – he eats at her pleasure, so pleasing her should probably top his list.
