Texas was SO close to completing a super collider that would have put Cern to shame and Texas on the world map. Cost overruns (and I’ve no doubt religious belief that we were tampering with things reserved only for the Judeo/Christian god) resulted in the nearly-finished project being canceled and the entire mechanism covered over with dirt.
That behavior was clearly base on ignorance, but I doubt that it was very scientific.
It was Cern, and not Texas that discovered the Higgs Boson.
