The last stand at Jalalabad

During the First Anglo-Afghan War, 4500 British troops left Kabul for Jalalabad. On the way they were killed by the Afghans except for one British officer, William Brydon. When he finally arrived and was asked about the army, he famously replied “I am the army”.

In 1627, Barbary pirates from the Ottoman Empire – also called corsairs – kidnapped 400-800 Icelanders and took them back to Africa to sell as slaves.
